Casting Every Care on God: A Devotional on 1 Peter 5:7

Hello, friend. If you’ve been carrying worries that feel too heavy, you’re not alone. Today we’re opening our Bibles together to explore what it truly means to cast every care on God through the powerful promise found in the Devotional on 1 Peter 5:7.

Open Your Bible

Before we go any further, I want you to grab your Bible or open your Bible app. Turn to 1 Peter 5:6-7 and read it slowly, out loud if you can:

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (NIV)

Now, let’s also look at Psalm 55:22, which echoes this same beautiful truth:

“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Take a breath. Read them again. Let these words settle over you like a warm blanket.

What Does It Mean to “Cast” Our Cares?

The word “cast” in 1 Peter 5:7 is powerful in the original Greek. It means to throw upon or hurl. This isn’t a gentle, hesitant hand-off. Peter is inviting us to actively, intentionally, and completely release our anxieties onto God.

Think about it: when you cast a fishing line, you don’t hold onto part of it. You release it fully. When you cast off a boat from the dock, you untie every rope. God is asking us to do the same with our worries. To let go completely, fully.

But here’s what makes this possible: the second half of the verse. “Because he cares for you.” The reason we can cast our cares on Him is not because we’re strong enough to let go, but because He is loving enough to catch them. His care for you is personal, tender, and unfailing.

The Posture of Humility

Notice that verse 6 comes right before our main verse: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand.” There’s a connection here that we can’t ignore.

Humility and surrender go hand in hand. When we try to carry everything ourselves, we’re essentially saying, “God, I’ve got this. I can manage.” But humility says, “God, I can’t do this alone. I need You.”

Sometimes our anxiety is rooted in our need for control. We think if we worry enough, plan enough, or work hard enough, we can keep everything together. But God invites us into a different way; a way where we acknowledge our limitations and rest in His unlimited power.

This isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. It’s recognizing that the God who holds the universe together can certainly hold our circumstances, our relationships, and our futures.

If you’re looking for tools to help you on this journey of casting your cares, I’ve put together a list of my favorite resources for managing anxiety with faith from journals to devotionals that have personally helped me learn to surrender.

He Cares for You, Personally

Let’s camp out here for a moment: “because he cares for you.”

Not “because He cares for people in general.” Not “because He’s obligated to.” But because He cares for you: with your specific name, your specific struggles, your specific season of life.

The God who knows the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30) cares about what’s keeping you up at night. The God who sees the sparrow fall (Matthew 10:29) sees your tears. Your worry is not too small for His attention or too big for His power.

This is the foundation of our casting. We can release our cares because we trust the One who receives them. He doesn’t roll His eyes at our anxiety. He doesn’t minimize our concerns. He invites us, with open arms, to bring everything to Him.

A Practice For Casting Every Care on God

Here’s something you can do right now, today, to live out 1 Peter 5:7:

Write it down and let it go. Take a piece of paper and write out one specific worry or burden you’re carrying. Be honest. Be detailed. Then, say this simple breath prayer out loud:

“God, I cast this care on You. Because You care for me.”

If you can, tear up the paper or place it somewhere you won’t see it, as a physical act of release. Each time that worry tries to creep back in, repeat the prayer. Remind yourself: you’ve already given this to God.

You might also find it helpful to revisit our recent devotional on Martha’s worry vs. Mary’s stillness, which explores how we can choose peace over productivity in our walk with Jesus.

A Closing Prayer

Father God, thank You for caring about every detail of our lives. Thank You that we don’t have to carry our burdens alone. Right now, we choose to cast our anxieties on You. Not because we’re perfect at trusting, but because You are perfect in Your love. Help us to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand. Teach us to release control and rest in Your care. When worry returns, remind us of Your promises. When fear whispers lies, let Your truth speak louder. We trust You with our today and our tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
