Anxiety has a way of sneaking up on us, doesn’t it? One minute we’re fine, the next we’re spiraling; heart racing, thoughts looping, that tight feeling in our chest that makes even breathing feel heavy. I’ve been there more times than I can count. But over the years I’ve learned that while anxiety may be loud, God’s voice is stronger, much gentler, and always outweighs those negative thoughts.

1. Philippians 4:6-7 – Trade Anxiety for the Peace That Guards Your Heart

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is probably the most-quoted passage on anxiety for a reason: it works. Paul doesn’t just tell us to stop worrying (as if it were that easy!). He gives us the exact replacement: prayer + thanksgiving.

Practical step I use almost daily:
When an anxious thought hits, I pause and pray three short things out loud or in writing:

  1. Lord, here’s exactly what I’m afraid of… (name it honestly)
  2. But I thank You for _ (find one thing, even tiny, to be grateful for in this moment)
  3. I’m giving this to You because You are good and You are in control.

Then I wait, even thirty seconds, and I almost always feel the tightness in my chest loosen. The peace that “surpasses understanding” isn’t hype. It’s real, and it shows up when we hand the burden over instead of clutching it tighter.

Try it this week. Keep a tiny “worry → prayer → thanksgiving” list in your notes app. You’ll be amazed at the pattern of peace that starts to form.


2. Isaiah 41:10 – You Are Not Alone in the Storm

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

I love how many promises are packed into one verse: presence, strength, help, and upholding. When I’m anxious, my brain often whispers, “You’re on your own. No one sees. No one can fix this.” Isaiah 41:10 is God’s direct rebuttal.

Reflection exercise:
Take this verse and turn it into a breath prayer.


Inhale slowly: “You are with me.”
Exhale slowly: “I will not fear.”


Repeat 5–10 times (or until your shoulders drop). I do this in the car, in waiting rooms, even in the middle of the night when my mind won’t shut off. It re-anchors me to the truth that the God of the universe is literally holding me.


3. Matthew 6:34 – Stop Borrowing Tomorrow’s Trouble

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Jesus is so kind here. He’s not scolding us for feeling anxiety— He’s reminding us that most of what we worry about never happens, and even if it does, we’ll have fresh grace waiting for us that day.

One habit that changed everything for me: At the end of each day I write down anything I’m tempted to carry into tomorrow, then I draw a little box around it and write “close the lid.” Visually telling my brain, “That belongs to tomorrow-God, not tonight-me.”

Give yourself permission to close the lid tonight.


4. 1 Peter 5:7 – Cast Your Anxiety Because He Cares

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

The Greek word for “casting” here is the same word used for throwing a blanket over a donkey. It’s not a polite hand-off. It’s a deliberate, whole-body throw.

I started doing something a little silly but incredibly helpful: When anxiety spikes, I physically act it out. I hold my hands out in front of me like I’m holding a heavy basket of worries, then I throw my hands forward and say, “Jesus, I’m throwing this to You because You care for me.” My kids have caught me doing it and now they do it too. It’s surprisingly freeing.

Try the physicalizing your casting this week. Throw it. He can handle the weight.


5. Psalm 94:19 – When Anxious Thoughts Multiply, His Comfort Multiplies More

“When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.”

I love that David acknowledges the “many” cares. He doesn’t pretend they’re few or small. But he puts the spotlight on God’s consolations; His comforts, His tender words, His presence, that are always more than enough.

Practical tip: Create a “God’s Consolations” note in your phone. Every time you notice God comforting you,, a song lyric, a kind text, a sudden peace, a verse that leaps off the page— write it down with the date. On the hard days, go back and read the proof that His comfort has never failed you yet.


A Simple Daily Rhythm to Fight Anxiety with Truth

Here’s a gentle routine I’ve been using that takes less than ten minutes but steadies me every single time:

  1. Morning – Read one of the verses above (rotate them).
  2. Midday – Do the 30-second breath prayer from Isaiah 41:10.
  3. Evening – Write one worry, draw a box around it, and thank God for one thing from the day.
  4. Before bed – Physically cast (throw your hands forward) and say 1 Peter 5:7 out loud.

Small, repeatable acts of faith are powerful. They renew our minds one truth at a time.
