Scripture Reading:
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” – Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Life rarely slows down. Between responsibilities, relationships, and the constant noise of the world, it can feel nearly impossible to pause and breathe. Yet in Psalm 46:10, God invites us to do just that: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
This verse is more than a suggestion—it’s a command to step out of our striving and step into trust. Being still doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means turning our focus from the chaos to the One who holds everything together.
Reflection
When the psalmist wrote these words, Israel was often surrounded by turmoil. Nations rose against them, enemies threatened them, and fear was a constant companion. But God reminded His people that He—not the surrounding nations—was in control.
The same is true for us today. Whether you’re facing financial stress, anxiety about the future, or simply the everyday overwhelm of life, God is calling you to slow down. He’s reminding you that His sovereignty is greater than your struggle.
As one article from Desiring God beautifully explains, the command to “be still” is not passive—it’s an active trust in God’s presence and power.
Practical Application
Here are three ways to live out Psalm 46:10 today:
- Start your morning with stillness. Before checking your phone or diving into tasks, take 5 minutes of silence to simply acknowledge God’s presence. Whisper His name and breathe deeply.
- Turn your worries into prayers. Instead of letting anxious thoughts spin in your head, write them down and offer them to God in prayer. Philippians 4:6–7 promises peace that transcends understanding.
- End your day with gratitude. Reflect on one way you saw God’s hand at work today. Thank Him before you sleep. Gratitude shifts our focus from what is wrong to the One who makes things right.
A Personal Thought
I’ve found that when I slow down and practice stillness, I begin to notice God’s gentle leading in ways I usually miss. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. If you’re longing for more peace, I encourage you to step into the stillness and trust that God is working behind the scenes.
